My Style

I will teach each person as if he or she is a professional musician in the making. This does not mean undue pressure is applied to students! My method is, instead, so much more effective and rewarding than pressure. Treating each student like a superstar means that students will never be taught tricks or music "shortcuts" from me, leading to a false sense of instant achievement. I believe tricks and shortcuts insult the capabilities of students and are, frankly, a waste of time. Instead, all students will receive a steady pace of accurate, effective, music education that will build a solid foundation which will support their learning and and serve them well in the future.

I will tailor lessons to the individual student, and we will have lots and lots of fun!

Family Responsibility

Students agree to arrive at each lesson punctually, well-prepared, and with their assignment books and music. To make good progress, daily quality practice is necessary. Contrary to most assumptions about piano lessons, lengthy daily practice is unnecessary. It is much better to work in a focused manner for 10 minutes a day than a couple hours before the lesson. And here's a secret: the teacher can tell the difference!

All students are encouraged to play at the year-end recital in June. This is a professional, yet low-key celebration of achievement in piano, not a stressful situation.

Students may practice at home on acoustic or digital pianos (look for a digital piano with weighted keys). Beginners may use a keyboard for a short duration after starting lessons, and may contact me for leads on acquiring an acoustic or digital piano that is preferable. I often have leads on free pianos looking for good homes.

Media Release Information

Students identified by photo may appear on my website or personal Facebook page. Students will never be named in full, but might be named by first name only, and only in celebration of a skill, birthday, special event, or the like. Students will receive the media release form at the first lesson of each year in the fall semester.
